The Assignment This assignment should serve as a starting point for the rest of the writing you will do in this course. In this project, you will narrow your focus to one issue that you are interested in exploring for the rest of the course related to social class in America by

· focusing your topic to one research question,

· designing a rhetorical situation for the project that includes:

The way in which you choose to present an argument is influenced by your individual experiences with the topic, by the audience to whom you address it, and by the purpose you hope to achieve.

In this assignment you will explore your values and perspectives about this issue before you begin to research the available positions on the issue and what others are saying about it for future papers. None of us look at an issue objectively, so this is where you will begin to define your unique position on the issue by describing the perspective you already bring to the table. For example, a single mother who chooses to write about the controversy over corporal punishment might describe her struggle to determine the best way to discipline her own children and whether or not she chooses to spank them. She might describe her own experience with discipline as a child, or she might choose to describe the influence of others on her decision. Finally, she would describe how these experiences influence her opinion on the issue of whether or not parents should spank their children.

Your Researched Persuasive Essay will be addressed to a specific audience whose thinking you want to influence. Your credibility will be very important in persuading this audience to adopt your evaluation of the issue or position, so you should take care to present yourself as someone who is reasonably well informed about the issue or civic action you are discussing. You may choose an audience that is open-minded about your evaluation. Or if you want to attempt something a bit more difficult, choose an audience that is skeptical or even hostile to you or your evaluation.
