Why we should keep PE in schools

Working individually, you will need to locate the Congressperson who serves your area. If the policy you selected is a state law, you will want to address a NC state Congressperson. If it is a federal law, you will want to address the letter to a federal Congressperson. Keep this in mind when selecting to whom the letter should be addressed.

An effective letter has these characteristics: a business format, correct spelling, and incorporated information you have researched. A poorly written letter does not use the proper form to address a Congress member, is too informal, shows disorganization, and does not use specific examples. Suggestions for writing a persuasive letter:

Keep it short. Limit the letter to one page and one issue.
Identify yourself as a concerned, motivated, and involved citizen and new voter. Do not refer to the letter as a school project.
Be polite, but take a firm position. Be confident in your understanding of the issue, and remember that the legislator may know less than you and may be voting along party lines or with the polls
If you are writing to a senator or representative, cite the specific bill and identify it by number, if such a bill exists. You can access the Congressional Web (both state and federal) site to find bill numbers.
Clearly describe the issue and your view of it. Select just three or four of the strongest scientific reasons that support your argument and develop them clearly. Too much information can distract from your purpose. Be sure your policy is well researched to make the most impact.
After stating arguments, make the letter personal. Say why the issue matters to you, your family, or your community.
Thank politicians for their time and efforts.

What you need to do:

1.Write a letter expressing your opinion regarding the health policy you have previously selected in class.

You are not required to actually send the letter, although I highly encourage you to do so if it is an active bill.
Your letter should indicate that you understand the details about the issue – you will need to do research to demonstrate this.
Do not include references in the letter, but you will turn in a reference list of the sources you used for information with the letter. Be sure you have the appropriate congressperson. If your policy is a state policy, you need to address a state congressman who represents your home county. If it is federal, you will need to address a member of congress who represents the state of NC.
When you turn in your reference page, be sure you include your address (which should be included in the return address portion of the letter) so I know you selected the correct political official.
