Part 1: Career Research

You will conduct career and education research on two different careers of your choice using reliable sources of information.  You must choose two careers that are not extremely similar (e.g. practical nurse and registered nurse). If you are unsure what career path you would like to explore, consider completing any of the career assessments listed on the resources page.  For each potential occupation, fill in the Career Research Chart with information about:

1. description of the job, including

• typical work tasks
• physical demands
• typical workplaces

1. salary range
2. possibility for advancement and/or for moving into related fields
3. employment outlook (using reliable sources)
4. minimum education/training requirements (i.e. type of diploma/degree, first aid & CPR, WHMIS etc.)
5. any other criteria that interest you

Part 2: Education Research

For each potential occupation, explore the educational requirements and compile information on programs from two educational institutions (so, you will be providing information for four programs in total).  For each potential program, fill in the Education Research Chart with information about:

1. admission requirements (for students with your level of education – for instance Pre-health, General Arts and Sciences)
2. cost of the program
3. duration of the program
4. start dates
5. placements
6. any other important information (i.e. additional trainings, testing, other information of interest)

All information gained from outside sources must be properly cited!

Part 3: Analysis

Answer the following questions based on your assessment results.  Your answers should describe your thoughts on why either career is a suitable option for you using concepts from the course.  Strong answers will reference course concepts, the textbook, assessments, discussions, and materials covered in class.

1. What interests/excites you about each program/career?  Do you have any concerns about either career?
2. What are some advantages and disadvantages of working in each career?
3. What will you need to do to meet the educational requirements for each of your careers, and are you prepared to do so?
4. How does your personality type align with each career? (information can be found on 16Personalities website)
5. How do your current skills and values align with each career?
6. What stresses could you experience in each of these programs/careers, and how will you cope with them?
7. What impact will your personal relationships have in your education and career advancements? How will you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
8. What conflicts could you experience in these careers and how could you deal with them? (consider information on conflict management and/or section on career paths and workplace habits on 16personalities)

The expectation is that you discuss why your chosen careers are suitable/unsuitable based on the concepts covered in this course.  Do not copy information from the internet – you should be writing your own answers.

Important Details:

• Late assignments will be deducted 5% per day, including weekends.  After one week the assignment will not be accepted and will receive a grade of 0.  Assignments that do not include in-text citations and a reference page will not be graded.
• Analysis essays that are not word-processed will not be graded.
