Civil law systems, also known Romano-Germanic or continental legal systems,  cover about 65% of the world jurisdictions. Civil law is based on categories, concepts, and rules derived from Roman law, with some influence of canon law, sometimes largely supplemented by local practices or culture. In their technical and narrow sense, the words civil laws signify the law that pertains to things, persons, and relationships that develop among them, excluding criminal law, commercial law, and labor law. Codification took place in most civil law jurisdictions, with the French Code civil and the German BGB being the most influential civil codes. A comprehensive system of principles and rules usually organized in codes and easily accessible to jurists and citizens.
