(I would like to expand further on this writing below and use the 2 sources that i’ve uploaded on file) Nade Allume 11/06/2019 The Cruelty Nature of human According to Stanley Milgram at Yale University, good people will perform “callous” and severe” actions simply in obedience to authority. Cruelty Nature of Human Being They will do so despite feeling that their actions are wrong, because they have no model for rebelling against an accepted social situation. Cruelty Nature of Human Being In an attempt to understand the events in which people carry out horrific acts against their fellows Stanley Milgram carried out a series of experiments in the 1960s at Yale University that directly attempted to investigate whether ordinary people might obey the orders of an authority figure to cause pain to a stranger. In his article (Human Relations) Cruelty Nature of Human Being Milgram talks about how the subjects obeyed the experimenters orders to continue administering shocks to the patients even as their heart level increase which could lead to a heart attack, although the subjects were concerned about the patients and they felt bad, but they obeyed the orders still. Milgram highlights the social structure with recognised lines of authority, ordinary people could be relatively easily persuaded to give what seemed to be even lethal electric shocks to another randomly chosen person. Cruelty Nature of Human Being Shirley Jackson’s story The Lottery offers a concrete illustration of this, When Shirley Jackson’s “Lottery” was first published in New Yorker in 1948, it brought nervousness to readers, most people in the mid-20th century were shocked by the reading and even wrote letters to the company who published The lottery by Shirley Jackson. Shirley writes about how obedience to authority is everywhere, even if the one giving orders really does not hold power as there would be no consequences for not obeying the orders given or questioning those giving the orders for example, when mrs. Hutchinson gets the black dot she doesn’t go against it, the only thing she says is “that it’s unfair” to make matters worse her husband shuts her up as (old man warner tells her to be a sport and play the game fair). In relation to Stanley Milgram, he felt that it was the social situation, and not the people themselves, that was responsible for the behavior. In Addition to Stanley Milgram’s findings in his experiment on obedience and disobedience to authorities, Seymour Hersh Cruelty Nature of Human Being “The My Lai Massacre” is another great example of obedience to authority, Cruelty Nature of Human Being Seymour talks about how during the Vietnam war United States soldiers murdered hundreds of innocent civilians and children, some of the soldiers claimed that they were following orders “We were told to just clear the area. It was a typical combat assault information. We came in hot, with a cover of artillery in front of us, came down the line and destroyed the village”. Others claim that “there are always civilian casualties in combat operations”. The commanding officer Lieutenant William L Calley was charged with six specifications of mass murder, Calley and his platoon marched into a village of civilians and children, were they had everyone in a line and Calley ordered his platoon to kill the civilians, one of Calley’s soldiers Paul Meadlo gave an eye witness account of what happened in while Calley was in command Cruelty Nature of Human Being “There was supposed to have been some Viet Cong in Pinkville and we began to make a sweep through it. Once we got there we began gathering up the people…started putting them in big mobs. There must have been 40 or 45 civilians big circle in the middle of the village….. Calley told me and a couple of other guys to watch them. Cruelty Nature of Human Being “You know what I want you to do with them’ he said “Meadlo related. He and the others continue to guard. He and the others continue to guard the group. “About 10 minutes later Calley came back. ‘Get with it’ he said. ‘I want them dead.’ “So we stood about 10 or 15 feet away from them, then he(Calley) started shooting them. Then he told me to start shooting them…… I started to shoot them”. Cruelty Nature of Human Being Although Meadlo knew within his conscious that it was wrong to kill innocent civilians in the village, he still obeyed the orders, this is another form of obedience to authority, because Meadlo did not question the orders given to him. In conclusion to this writing based on my findings of the reading i would say that people in general are always obedient to any form of authority, no matter what circumstances are given Cruelty Nature of Human Being
