The research paper for this course is worth 56 points and accounts for 33% of your final grade. All students must answer the following question:

To what extent is the National Security Strategy of the United States of America consistent with a Realist outlook on the world? 

This research paper is expected to be 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages in 12-point Times New Roman font. The Research paper is due by the stated date on Canvas. Points will be deducted from papers received after this time unless the student provides evidence of a medical, personal, or family emergency (e.g., a note from a doctor explaining the need for the extension), which he/she presents to the instructor and attaches to the paper.  Late papers will be reduced by one grade for each day late (e.g., a paper that would have received a “B” if turned in on time, would receive a “C+” for being one day late). All papers will be graded based on clarity of writing, quality of organization, scholarly content, effectiveness of documentation (i.e., accurately citing your sources), and strength of conclusions.

Please think about the following aspects when considering your paper:

• What is realism and what kind of outlook does it have of the world?
• What are the different strands of realism and does anyone in particular stand out?
• You do not need to cover every aspect of the the National Security Strategy – instead you may wish to focus on one or two key aspects (be clear about this)
• Please make sure to use academic sources in this essay – you can draw from materials used in class, but you should also conduct further research
• You may choose to critique realism, or perhaps you think a different theory better explains the Strategy.

2. 1. All quotations, ideas drawn from other’s work etc. must be cited directly in the paper using in text citation, for example, (Pieri 2014: 33)
   2. In text citations must be used directly at the time in which the idea/quotation is used
   3. A separate page at the end of the paper in which all sources used must be referenced.
   4. List every source from which you drew words, ideas, or direct quotations.
   5. I expect a minimum of 8 social scientific research articles or books (i.e., scholarly articles/books that have been peer-reviewed).
   6. You are also expected to draw upon from opinion pieces, blog posts, news articles and from information presented during class lectures.
   7. ALL sources MUST be cited, and these additional sources may not be counted among the 8 required citations from the social science literature.
   8. Any form of plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 being issued
