Attribution theory

   Attribution theory remains a vital aspect in relation to social psychology theory. The attribution notion originated from Fritz Heider in the year 1958, whose argument was that many people are ‘naive scientists’ and they often seek to explain personal events by placing attribute causes in them. Consequently, attributions are described inferences people make regarding causes of either their behavior or of other people. The theory remains a concept widely used in sports psychology and investigates the things people often attribute their failure or success in sports.

In a gym fitness environment understanding how one’s clients attribute to either their failure and success. The application of the attribution theory in a fitness environment evidently shows how the emotions of a client are influenced by either success or failure and the client’s believe on the cause. The situation is helpful in encouraging a gym instructor in ensuring the client attains their intended goals. Even though that seems like a simple and apparent observation, one has to observe the emotions associated with failure, incompetence, depression, and guilt to understand the damage done when a client feels they have not achieve their goals (Försterling, 2008). The first thing that happens is that the gym instructor, which is an external factor, is the first one to be blamed ad the damage that affect his reputation as well as business. This means the failure of the client has ramifications for all the parties involved.

On the other hand, when a client succeed, pride, satisfaction, and confidence growth is evident and the drive will help them to continue exercising. In case the aspect is attributed to the gym instructor, this means the client is most likely  to continue working with the same instructor tell other people. There is a need for a trainer to clients attributes their success to them and is particularly important when the client has low self-esteem because of trying for many years to attain their goals and failing. In such a situation, attribution theory can be used to motivate encourage a client by using statements, which connect their training to internal factors and try to explain the reasons for their achievements (Försterling, 2008). The statement should explain to them that they have attained their goals because of their hard work. It important to give clients feedback when their performance is good because many instructors only communicate as a technical correction  and often go silent when the client performs the exercise in a correct manner. It is important for a  gym instructor to link the success of the clients to their own hard work. When a client attains their goals emphasize should be on the fact that it was mainly their hard work even of they believe that the instructor played a big role.

At the same time, failure should also be attributed to external causes when necessary in that when a client fails, the emphasis should be attributed to external factors. This can apply in situations where external factors were evident otherwise; clients would refuse to be responsible for the internal control being the reason for their failure (Hewstone, 2003). Such a situation would make them not be positive or even implement strategies that would help them overcome the factors. The theory is helpful in such a setting as it ensures client is successful and they take ownership of their success. Even though it is a great ego boost, if they believe they play a great role in their success, real benefits comes from ensuring the client attribute success to himself or herself.
