Journal week 1: March 23 , 2020

Hours : 10 hours .

Description :

My volunteer activity at Kindred hospital Los Angeles Medical Surgical unit/Telemetry , initially my goal was to help the nursing staff, management and patients, work on the” hourly round patient safety continuum” that they already have, but it goes beyond that, I did not just jump into it , I first of all got myself familiar with the environment , followed by ; transporting patients.

· clerical duties

· give directions or escort visitors

· inventory

· answer telephone

· deliver flowers

· socialize with patients and/or visitors

· change linens

· restock closets

· cleaning

Apart from helping with some clerical duties, and some inventories, I also did most of my work on Hourly Round to patients rooms, there is no doubt that this helps in solving a lot of safety issues like falls and also will help in pressures ulcer prevalence because while making rounds you will see that some patients needs to be repositioned, and by 2 hourly patient repositioning keeps them away from developing pressure ulcers. It promotes patient safety and satisfaction. I involved the nurse manager and the nursing staff to make sure this was implemented. In the Healthcare system a patient fulfillment is an important measure to assess the quality of care that is given. It is not only used for quality care but this is how the hospital gets its money. Patient satisfaction and initiative has been put into action by many hospitals. Intentional rounding or nursing rounding by nursing staff is one of the initiatives. In this initiative patients needs has to be attended .This hourly rounding is very important as it improves patient’s satisfaction and safety.

Journal week 2: March 30 , 2020

Description :

My week 2 volunteer activity at Kindred hospital Los Angeles Medical Surgical unit/Telemetry , After getting started with the usual clerical and some stock inventory in the unit. At noon that day I had a meeting with the unit supervisors , managers and all hospital Internal stakeholders on information and education regarding COVID 19. The issue of COVID 19 is now the main topic on ground , on how to keep ourselves safe and the patients . The Chief clinical officer of the hospital discussed the guidelines from CDC on how to stay safe, which is by treating everyone as infected;

· Practice social distancing by putting at least 6 feet between yourself and other people.

· Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

· Stay home if you are sick.

· Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water.

· Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

· Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

The issue of checking the temperature of staff was also discussed, and the volunteer team was educated on how to check the temperature of every staff and visitor that comes in to the hospital building. Anyone with temperature of above 100 will not be allowed to come in, If a staff member , then the person will be sent home to get tested and stay home for a period of 2 weeks.

That was also good and eventful as I got started after the meeting and that kept me busy through the whole day.
