Assignment Instructions
Below are links to European television commercials (advertisements). Select at least 4 of the advertisements and write 1500 words analyzing what the content, setting and message illustrates to you about the geographic environment of Europe.
When considering the geographic environment of Europe think about the aspects of Europe that have been considered in the class – Regional definitions of Europe, physical landscapes, human/environment interactions, cultural geography, language, religion, population geography political geography, urban form, social geography, role of women, education, popular culture, tourism.
You should consult at least 3 external references to support your discussion of the advertisements. These do not necessarily need to be scholarly, but you should base your narrative within the context of the opinions of others.
In the “Evaluation and Analysis” description of the report below, you will find an outline of what I expect. It may help to develop your work by considering the questions posed.
Organization of Report
Introduction
State product/issue represented in the advertisements selected. Include a proposed title and brief description. You should select at least 4. Note the country of origin and the general setting.
“Evaluation and Analysis”
Outline the reasons for your selections. Did you find the amusing, alarming, risqué or generally unusual?
Your readings should help you frame comments about each advertisement. You will describe the “plot” of each advertisement and consider it in geographic context. You will provide your opinions on each advertisement. Please demonstrate rational, reflective thought and logical arguments.
· Which aspects of European geography do your advertisements include (physical, social, political, population, medical, etc.)?
· How did the advertisements enhance what did you have learned beyond what is covered in the text, discussions and the classroom? How did your selection contribute to your understanding of Geography in Europe? This should be several paragraphs.
· Are there current conditions or issues that provide context for the setting? What is the implied time period?
· Who and what are involved – individuals, groups, officials, governments, companies, agencies, organizations?
· Does the content of the advertisements pertain specifically to issues on the continent of Europe? What impression do you get of the culture of the countries based on the advertisements?
· Do you find these advertisements different from advertisements in the U.S./your home country?
· Would these advertisements be appealing to an American audience?
· Do the advertisements surprise you?
· Was there any part of your advertisements that you felt was controversial or overly stereotypical?
· List any term or concept that you did not previously know.
· Do your opinions compare to or refute your research? Make informed editorial comments about why your opinions are either similar or dissimilar.
· What particular question do the advertisements raise in your mind? Please be provocative, but appropriate.
Resource Information/References
What information did you find that has been written about the issues raised in the advertisements? Research and cite 3 additional references and summarize information and material from your readings. These materials will be listed in your References.
Summary & Conclusion
Summarize your advertisement evaluation and analysis by listing the major points. What conclusion can you make about how they represent the geography of Europe?

Format of Report
The report should be submitted by 5pm on the due date using the following structure:
Electronic .pdf file uploaded to GEA 3500 Canvas drop box under Assignment 3 in Modules
Page 1, top left. Type the following information:
· Your name
· Title of your report
· Due date of report
· GEA 3500
Your report should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins. Your report should be a minimum 1,500 original words excluding references page. Quotations taken from materials must be correctly cited and should not be included in the count of “original” words. Include the word count at the end of your report before the References Page. Sub-titles may be used. Insert the page number at the top right on each page starting on page 1 of the actual report.
Assignment 3 – Evaluation of European Values demonstrated by Advertisements is due by Friday at 5pm. Consult the class syllabus for deadlines.
