Overview: Each student will conduct a Capstone Project. Projects begin with a question or a hypothesis relevant to Human Biology, and proceed to scrutinize claims and perspectives forwarded in websites, books, media reports, and scientific articles.

Research Question: Example questions include: What is the cause of human skin color variation? Why is the rate of diabetes/cancer in/decreasing? Why is there cultural variation in wet-nursing? Are rates of orthopedic injury related to lifestyle factors? What is the origin of HIV/AIDS? What is the “natural” human diet? Why do humans differ in their resistance/ susceptibility to diseases? What explains resistance to vaccination? Are humans sexually monogamous? How well does evolutionary psychology explain human behavior? In some cases, with prior approval from their course instructor, students may conduct new research on their chosen topic.

Multidisciplinary Explanatory Approach: Students are expected to explore multiple avenues of explanation (i.e., analytical approaches and interpretive perspectives) to their main research question. This should specifically incorporate evidence from across the disciplinary spectrum of the major.

Regularly Scheduled Support to Ensure Student Progress: Capstone Projects will be developed through a number of collaborative, in-class discussions that are pre-scheduled over the course of the semester. Additionally, there will be a visit from a Writing Fellow from Hunter College’s Rockowitz Writing Center to focus on the development of a thesis-driven capstone Final Paper. Furthermore, each student will be required to meet one-on-one with the Writing Fellow at least once (scheduling instructions will follow) to help you improve your Capstone Project. The regularly scheduled collaborative, in-class Capstone Project discussions, combined with the separate guidance from a Writing Fellow, will help to ensure students make steady, demonstrable progress towards the completion of high quality Capstone Projects. Originality of Work: Written work that was used in any manner for another course is NOT acceptable in this course. If you are thinking of working on a topic that is closely related to one that you handed in as a paper for another class, please talk with your instructor ASAP. Also, all papers will be run through a plagiarism checker and our course adheres to the Hunter policy on academic dishonesty, as stated in the syllabus.

Part Two of the Capstone Project is the Final Paper. Each student will write a 12-15 page Final Paper that examines and communicates their Capstone Project in detail.

Final Paper Grading Rubric

Followed Directions: 10 points

Paper is appropriate length.
Margins, font, and spacing are all according to paper guidelines.
Sources, both in-text and within the bibliography, are formatted correctly.

Research: 20 points

There are a sufficient number of sources (will vary for different topics).
Sources are nearly all from peer-reviewed journals or edited volumes (your topic may merit use of non-peer-reviewed material, confer with instructor).
Sources are appropriate for, and adequately represent the scope of, the subject.

Summation of the Research: 30 points

Clearly understood the problem or topic being discussed.
Clearly understood the various arguments and theories on the subject.
Did not quote other authors – could summarize work using own words.
All data provided is well supported with citations.

Analysis/Explanatory Approach: 20 points

For students who did statistical tests

Tests carried out were appropriate for the question.

For students who did traditional thesis papers

Provided a strong thesis that outlined an argument (not just stating the obvious).
Did more than summarize sources, but provided critical thought on the research.
