JUVENILE OFFENDERS/CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN

Write a 6-8 page research paper about one of the populations from the list of “Groups in Need” found in Chapter 2 of your text. This paper will build on the Discussion topic of Week 2. Refer to the discussion prompts provided for Week 2 and work from there: “I’m discussing both of these groups because many times they go hand in hand. Working at a RTC, a majority of our children placed here come from CPS and not from the Juvenile Probation ofÖce. However, all of the boys placed at my facility are juvenile offenders. Human services offers several different things for both populations to “empower” them. For child abuse victims there are child protective services set up in all states in the US. This includes a hot line for them to report abuse, case workers to investigate, therapist and proper medical evaluations are offered in most cases. As well as the children being provided with a safe living environment, food, clothing, and many other essentials needed for a child to thrive and grow in a safe and secure place. For juvenile offenders there are also many options that vary based on the severity of the offenses each child has committed. At my facility we house a wide range of children and while it is a secured facility we are not a lock down establishment. Yet we house juvenile sex offenders in one of our dorms. Juvenile offenders are offered every opportunity to re-acclimate successfully back in to society but it is not always the cure. In both groups there are several barriers that are faced. With child abuse, you can run in to false reports or any variety of other factors that will lead to the cases being dropped and not fully investigated. Government funding also provides a lot of limitations to just how much they can do. For juvenile offenders, the major issue faced is society’s view on these children. Often public views are that these children are not punished severely enough for committing adult crimes. So the juvenile justice system has encountered a problem with how they are supposed to properly handle these children by still giving them a chance to turn their lives around while appeasing the public. Again, government funding for these organizations that are trying to reform these children leads to a long list of limitations on just how much support and help they can provide these children. Personally, I believe that while there could be some improvements to the systems in place, I think that they are rather effective as they are in both groups. There is always room for improvement but this can be said about a lot of things. Research Paper Write a 6-8 page research paper about one of the populations from the list of “Groups in Need” found in Chapter 2 of your text. This paper will build on the Discussion topic of Week 2. Refer to the discussion prompts provided for Week 2 and work from there. Listed under Course Resources in the Content area of the class website you will Önd a grading rubric and APA template. Format: The paper should follow APA style, in both the overall format of the paper and in the documentation of sources. It should be double-spaced, with 1″ margins. Use a 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman. Include a title page, abstract, and reference page. Length of paper: It should be at least 1,000 words in the body (not counting the Title Page, Abstract, Introductory text, Conclusion, References, Graphs, Tables, and Appendices). References: Your textbook may be used as one of your peer-reviewed sources of information for the paper. You must have at least one additional peerreviewed source. Follow APA style in citing your sources. For more information about APA Style, visit: Columbia College Writing Center Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) Term Paper Rubric Used for grading the course term paper. Required Element High Quality Abstract 10 Points Think of the Abstract as a stand-alone document … a preview of sorts … for example, a block of text you would post on Amazon.com for anyone who wanted to know what you wrote about before ordering or purchasing copies of your entire research document. The Abstract provides a brief and comprehensive summary of the study. It should be accurate (do not include information here that is not in the body of the manuscript), self-contained (spell out abbreviations), concise (120 -150 words, 250 words maximum, 100 words minimum), and speciÖc (begin this section with the most important information and limit it to the four or Öve most important concepts, Öndings, or implications of the study or of your research). Do NOT simply cut and paste text already written in the body of the paper. Introduction 10 Points Paragraph or two (at least 100 words) addressing: Why is this issue relevant or important? To whom is it important? The Introduction is organized to move from general information to speciÖc information Do NOT use the Introduction to summarize your paper. The Abstract is for that. Use the Introduction to capture the reader’s attention and lead them into the body of text. Body of Paper 40 Points Length of paper: It should be at least 1,000 words in the body (not counting the Title Page, Abstract, Introductory text, Conclusion, References, Graphs, Tables, and Appendices). Content of paper is well organized in paragraphs that are uniÖed, coherent, and effective, with transitions between ideas. The student shows familiarity with the reading. Well written, critical, analytical and informed thinking is evident. The student does not overuse quotes to write their paper. Summary /Conclusion 10 Points A closing summary (100 word minimum), that clearly reminds the reader of the preceding content, and makes recommendations on how to deal with any of the “population” issues on a social, political or economic level. I prefer the student use an internal heading for this; either Summary or Conclusion. References 5 Points References: The paper uses references from assigned texts and scholarly journals that are freely available at the Columbia College library. These references should all be important to the content of the paper, and the student should adequately review and comment upon them. APA Style 10 Points Page 1 (Title page): 1. Running head in header, properly formatted and correct length, along with page number. (1 point for each of the 10 items listed.) 2. Title and Author information properly placed on Örst page. Page 2: 3. Proper information in header of pages 2 and following (SHORTENED TITLE and correct page numbering). 4. “Abstract” at top of page, center-justiÖed. 5. Abstract is block text, not indented. Page 3 and following: 6. Double space, 12 pt., one-inch margins … for entire paper, including Abstract and References. 7. Full title at top of page 3, center-justiÖed. 8. Proper use of internal headings, including the fact that there is no “Introductions” heading in APA. Last page: 9. “References” at top of page, center-justiÖed 10. References properly formatted, with second and following lines indented. Presentation 15 Points Proper punctuation, grammar, spelling, and sentence structure will be closely examined for college quality. Deduct 1 point per error Deduct 5 points for each improperly cited paragraph. (When quoting or paraphrasing) Blatant plagiarism earns a zero for the entire assignment.
