JUVENILE OFFENDERS/CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN

Write a 6-8 page research paper about one of the populations from the list of “Groups in Need” found in Chapter 2 of your text. This paper will build on the Discussion topic of Week 2. Working at a RTC, a majority of our children placed here come from CPS and not from the Juvenile Probation ofÖce. However, all of the boys placed at my facility are juvenile offenders. Human services offers several different things for both populations to “empower” them. For child abuse victims there are child protective services set up in all states in the US. This includes a hot line for them to report abuse, case workers to investigate, therapist and proper medical evaluations are offered in most cases. As well as the children being provided with a safe living environment, food, clothing, and many other essentials needed for a child to thrive and grow in a safe and secure place. For juvenile offenders there are also many options that vary based on the severity of the offenses each child has committed. At my facility we house a wide range of children and while it is a secured facility we are not a lock down establishment. Yet we house juvenile sex offenders in one of our dorms. Juvenile offenders are offered every opportunity to re-acclimate successfully back in to society but it is not always the cure. In both groups there are several barriers that are faced. With child abuse, you can run in to false reports or any variety of other factors that will lead to the cases being dropped and not fully investigated. Government funding also provides a lot of limitations to just how much they can do. For juvenile offenders, the major issue faced is society’s view on these children. Often public views are that these children are not punished severely enough for committing adult crimes. So the juvenile justice system has encountered a problem with how they are supposed to properly handle these children by still giving them a chance to turn their lives around while appeasing the public. Again, government funding for these organizations that are trying to reform these children leads to a long list of limitations on just how much support and help they can provide these children. Personally, I believe that while there could be some improvements to the systems in place, I think that they are rather effective as they are in both groups. There is always room for improvement but this can be said about a lot of things. Summary /Conclusion 10 Points A closing summary (100 word minimum), that clearly reminds the reader of the preceding content, and makes recommendations on how to deal with any of the “population” issues on a social, political or economic level. References 5 Points References: The paper uses references from assigned texts and scholarly journals that are freely available at the Columbia College library.
