Topic/Article: https://anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.14506/ca34.1.09 Directions: 1) an article that you have annotated (following the format/guidelines below) and 2) a minimum one page, typed summary and analysis of article and assignment. 1) Instructions for annotated article You will need three different colored highlighters – Green, Yellow, and Orange. Alternatively you could use three different colored pens (to underline) – Red, Black, and Blue. You will also need something to write on the actual article – so any color of pen/pencil if you are using highlighters or a different colored pen if you are doing the colored pen option. On the first page, please make a key explaining what each color represents. Using the green highlighter (or red pen to underline) please highlight and annotate the following: 1. Highlight author′s main argument and next to this write ″main argument.″ If there are multiple main arguments, write ″main argument #2″ and so forth. 2. Highlight all of the author′s support to arguments (this could be author′s reasoning, evidence, data interpretation, etc.) Next to each one, write ″support #1 to argument #1″ and so on. Using the yellow highlighter (or black pen to underline), please highlight segments of the article that you find confusing or that you have additional questions about. 1. This could mean something you read in the article and you didn′t understand. In this case – comment next to the segment telling me exactly what about it you didn′t understand. 2. This could also mean that you read something and it generated a question in your mind. In this case – comment next to the segment with what question popped in your head. 3. This could also mean that you read something that you question/doubt or would like to research even further on your own. In this case – comment next to the segment with why you question what you question or what exactly you want to further research. Using the orange highlighter (or blue pen) please highlight segments of the article that you disagree with or feel the author is lacking in logic and/or support. 1. If you disagree with author, highlight the section and write down why you disagree (one sentence is fine) 2. If you think the author is lacking in support/evidence/logic, highlight the section and write down your comment on it. Be as specific as possible. 3. If you find any other weaknesses (examples would be small sample size, bad methodology, inappropriate generalization of data, not addressing known counter arguments, etc), please write your specific issues next to highlighted section. 2) Instructions for typed one page b. Please address the following in your paper: Brief summary of paper (argument, methodology, and conclusions) and your thoughts on how effective this paper was on supporting their argument. General thoughts on the methodology they used. What are some strengths and weaknesses of ethnography. Bring up specific examples from your paper to support your answers. Explain the process of engaging with something you read in this manner (annotating). How is this different from the normal way you read things? Do you think you will incorporate this strategy in the future? Why or why not? Describe your experience/thoughts with this assignment. What did you think about it? Did it help you understand the article better or worse? Explain your answer.
