As indicated by the course syllabus, 20% of the semester grade comes from the five to seven-page written review of one of the volumes listed in the syllabus, or otherwise approved by the instructor. It may be helpful to rehearse the following deadlines:
Students should secure these titles either from the CSP library, or, if our library does not have the work in question, by inter-library loan. Also, some of these books can be purchased very inexpensively through channels (usually online outlets) with which students are already very familiar.
The books listed in the syllabus are not all of the same character (e.g., one or two of them are narrative in form), so there may be some variation from one book to another. Nevertheless, in carrying out this assignment, students should execute the following steps:
(a) Read chosen work carefully, taking good notes—or at least as many notes as one needs to carry out the rest of the assignment. Obviously, if one procures the book for his or her own library, one is free to “mark up” the book in any way that is deemed most helpful.

(b) In the paper itself, first identify the main thesis or point of the book. If this cannot be reduced to one point, the most important two or three points should be stated. Generally, the main idea(s) can be discerned pretty quickly and stated relatively efficiently. If it is impossible to identify a main thesis or theses, generally one can still identify one or two major themes of the book (i.e., an idea or ideas that recur throughout the book).
(c) Summarize and unfold the main lines of argument that the author uses to support this thesis or the central points (or the themes) of the volume.
(d) In two or three paragraphs, indicate whether you find this overall argument or presentation compelling, and state your reasons for this position. These reasons should engage the arguments of the text. In other words, this is an academic exercise, and you must do more than say whether or not you “agree” or “disagree” with the point an author is making
(e) State the one or two (no more than three) most important things you will take from your reading of and interaction with this book. Even if one dislikes or has a responsible disagreement with a book, all of the titles on this list have something (usually many things) to teach an attentive reader.
(f) To some extent, the length of the review will vary depending on the title being read and reviewed. Please note that the assignment is for a review of five to seven pages. Students will be penalized if their review does not reach the minimum of five pages.
Students will be graded on both content and the quality of the written composition.
Students will write their essays in good, expository English prose; and they must consistently follow the rules of a standard manual of style (whether it be MLA, APA, University of Chicago, or anything used by Concordia’s English department). Students will be penalized if there are excessive spelling errors or too many grammatical and syntactical mistakes.
In terms of the content of the essay, it will be graded on the basis of the organization of the essay and especially how well, carefully, and thoroughly one follows and completes the steps indicated in letters “a” through “f” above. Make sure you have completed all the steps, and make sure that there is evidence of actual interaction with the text of the book you are reviewing.
Simply stated – – – each student controls how much work, attention, and care put into an assignment of this kind. As such, the situation is not the same as it is on the four tests. Here, this is largely your paper, and you get to decide what goes on the pages. So, the admonition might be: work hard on this assignment, and it can pay big dividends in one’s final grade, since it does count for 20% of the semester grade (which is more than any one test).
